Background of the study
Efficient public transportation is a cornerstone of urban mobility and plays a pivotal role in stimulating economic activities. In Umuahia South Local Government Area, Abia State, public transportation systems have become essential in connecting various parts of the city, facilitating the movement of people, goods, and services. Improved urban mobility not only enhances the quality of life of residents but also drives economic growth by reducing travel time, increasing access to markets, and fostering regional integration. Recent studies have shown that effective public transportation contributes to economic development and urban sustainability by reducing congestion and lowering transportation costs (Okoro, 2023; Chukwu, 2024). Moreover, public transportation serves as an equalizer by providing affordable mobility options to diverse socio-economic groups. This study examines how public transportation systems influence urban mobility patterns and, consequently, economic activities in Umuahia South. It investigates the interdependencies between transportation infrastructure, commuter behavior, and economic performance, thereby offering insights into the challenges and opportunities for urban development in the region (Nwosu, 2025).

Statement of the problem
In Umuahia South, the existing public transportation system faces numerous challenges that impede urban mobility and limit economic growth. Inadequate service frequency, poor vehicle conditions, and inefficient route planning contribute to delays and increased commuting costs. As a result, residents and businesses face difficulties in accessing employment opportunities, markets, and services. This has led to reduced economic activities and a lower standard of living for many in the community. Although efforts have been made to improve public transportation, persistent infrastructural and operational deficiencies continue to hamper progress. The lack of comprehensive data on the impact of public transportation on urban mobility and economic activities further complicates policy formulation. This study seeks to address these challenges by examining the role of public transportation in shaping economic interactions and urban mobility patterns, with the aim of informing better planning and policy interventions (Okechukwu, 2023).

Objectives of the study

  • To evaluate the current state of public transportation in Umuahia South.

  • To assess the impact of public transportation on urban mobility patterns.

  • To analyze the relationship between public transportation and economic activities.

Research questions

  • How does public transportation affect urban mobility in Umuahia South?

  • What is the impact of public transportation on economic activities in the area?

  • What improvements are needed in the public transportation system to enhance urban mobility and economic growth?

Research Hypotheses

  • An efficient public transportation system significantly enhances urban mobility.

  • Improved public transportation correlates with increased economic activities.

  • Addressing deficiencies in public transportation will lead to measurable economic benefits.

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it provides empirical evidence on the role of public transportation in promoting urban mobility and stimulating economic growth. Its findings will assist policymakers, urban planners, and transportation authorities in designing strategies that improve service delivery and foster sustainable urban development (Uche, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study
The study is limited to the impact of public transportation on urban mobility and economic activities in Umuahia South Local Government Area, Abia State. It does not extend to other regions or factors beyond the public transportation system, and is based on locally available data and surveys.

Definitions of terms

  • Public transportation: Systems of transport for passengers that are available for use by the general public, such as buses and shared taxis.

  • Urban mobility: The ease with which people can move around an urban environment.
